The Laboratory Practices Monitoring Committee (Caplab) is a specialized body, linked to the Pro-Rectory of Research and Graduate Studies and the Pro-Rectory of Undergraduate Studies and Continuing Education at PUCRS.
Caplab was established by Ordinance No. 037/2010 and is regulated by Regulation of the Laboratory Practices Monitoring Committee, dated June 4, 2010, issued by the Rector of PUCRS. Its objective is to promote good practices in teaching, research and extension activities carried out in PUCRS laboratory environments. The Specialized Service in Occupational Safety and Medicine (SESMT) is responsible for the process of evaluating laboratories in terms of good practices in the environment and in occupational safety and medicine.
Caplab is made up of a board of at least six members, with a multidisciplinary and multiprofessional character, appointed by the Pro-Rector of Research and Graduate Studies and the Pro-Rector of Undergraduate Studies and Continuing Education of PUCRS.

The Animal Use Ethics Committee (Ceua) arose from the need to establish parameters for the ethically appropriate use of non-human animals within PUCRS. It is a regulatory, consultative, deliberative, supervisory and educational body whose primary function is to comply with and enforce standards and conduct in the use and breeding of animals for scientific research, teaching and extension activities.
The actions of Ceua-PUCRS are guided by the principles contained in internationally recognized documents on the subject and seek to contribute to national data regarding the handling of animals. At the institutional level, Ceua acts in accordance with the Reference Framework prepared by the Ethics Committee for Scientific and Technological Development of PUCRS (Cedecit), which defends the research and scientific development of projects that are in accordance with the promotion and protection of human beings in their dignity, life in general and the environment and in accordance with Law No. 11.794 (Arouca Law), of October 2008, Decree No. 6.899, of July 15, 2009, and other regulations of the National Council for the Control of Animal Experimentation (Concea).
The CEUA must evaluate research protocols and lesson plans that include the handling of animals, and also monitor approved projects. Ethics in the use of animals will be guaranteed by assessing the scientific relevance of the procedure that justifies the use of animals, by taking care to minimize animal pain and suffering through the use of appropriate analgesia, anesthesia and euthanasia methods, by performing prior statistical designs, by taking care of the basic conditions for maintaining animal life and by encouraging the replacement of non-human animals with alternative methods whenever possible. In order to include a research project on the CEUA meeting agenda, the project must be submitted 5 days before the meeting date.

The modifications proposed by the researcher in charge cannot change the characteristics of the study originally proposed and approved by Ceua.
In general, substantial changes to the study design, hypotheses, entire methodology and primary objectives cannot be considered amendments, and the responsible researcher must submit a new research project.
The amendment request must be submitted via presentation letter, by email to Ceua (ceua@pucrs.br), with the description and justification of the desired changes.
The amendment will be analyzed by the bodies responsible for its final approval and the opinion will be forwarded by official letter to the researcher in charge.

Research activities have increased in quantity and complexity in recent years. This raises numerous ethical questions regarding the process of planning, executing, evaluating and disseminating the results of research projects involving human beings. Due to the need to adapt research practices to these changes, the PUCRS Research Ethics Committee (CEP) was created on May 17, 1990, the first to comply with Brazilian standards and guidelines.
On December 12, 2012, CNS Resolution 466/12 revoked CNS Resolutions 196/96, 303/2000, and 404/2008. The new text states: “All research involving human beings must be submitted to a Research Ethics Committee for review.” The Terms and Definitions item defines Research Ethics Committees as interdisciplinary and independent collegiate bodies with “munus public,” of an advisory, deliberative, and educational nature, created to defend the interests of research subjects in their integrity and dignity and to contribute to the development of research within ethically correct standards. As of 2016, CNS Resolution 510/16 established that projects developed in the area of Humanities and Social Sciences must also receive ethical review by the Research Ethics Committee.

Scientific committees are bodies directly linked to the respective management of PUCRS University Units, constituting evaluation bodies related to research activities, and must follow the guidelines established by Propesq regarding their profile of action.
Scientific committees are made up of professors accredited as permanent or collaborating faculty in the University's Graduate Programs. Research Coordinators of Schools may not be members of the scientific committee of the same University Unit.
The scientific committees will have a coordinator, a deputy coordinator and members indicated by the manager of the respective University Unit and appointed by means of an ordinance issued by Propesq.
The term of office of the scientific committees will be one (1) year, always starting in March, with the possibility of renewal, respecting the good practice of periodic renewal of some of the members.
Sole Paragraph. The evaluation of research projects whose sole purpose is the review and synthesis of scientific literature and case reports is optional, respecting the culture and evaluation routine, as long as this information is clear on the page or in the Moodle area of each University Unit.
