Professor Eduardo Eizirik, from the Graduate Programs in Cellular and Molecular Biology and Ecology and Evolution of Biodiversity from the PUCRS School of Health and Life Sciences, was elected a full member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (ABC), the most prestigious scientific institution in the country. The election recognizes the professor's academic trajectory and significant contributions to the advancement of science in Brazil, especially in the areas of genetics, evolution and biodiversity conservation. The inauguration ceremony took place on the 8th, at the Naval School, in Rio de Janeiro.

“First, the name is nominated by a full member of the academy. Afterwards, the names are put to a vote within the specific area, which in my case is Biological Sciences.”, explains Eizirik, about how the election works.

The second part of the selection process is up to all scientists who are full members of the ABC. So, the ballots are filled out by members from all areas. “Therefore, it is very honorable to receive this support from colleagues to be part of the category of full member of the Academy, the institution with the greatest prominence among Brazilian scientists”, assesses the PUCRS professor.

The ABC is an independent, non-governmental, non-profit organization that currently has over 900 members from different categories. Founded with the goal of promoting the scientific, educational and social development of Brazil, the Academy works on several fronts, such as recognizing scientific merit, publishing the journal Anais da ABC and producing studies on strategic issues for the country, providing scientific support for the formulation of public policies. Eizirik's election represents not only individual recognition, but also highlights the excellence of the research developed at PUCRS.

“It is gratifying to see recognition for our work, for our research projects, for the international reach and for the impact of the projects we carry out. Obviously, it is recognition for PUCRS, a university that conducts high-level international research, with a very relevant impact in several areas of knowledge.”

With vast scientific production and international activity, Eduardo Eizirik has stood out for his research into the evolution, genetics and genomics of South American fauna species, in addition to participating in and leading projects focused on biodiversity in partnership with institutions in Brazil and abroad.

Eduardo Eizirik is a biologist graduated from UFRGS, with a master's degree in Genetics and Molecular Biology from the same institution and a PhD in Biology from University of Maryland (USA). Throughout his career, he has established himself as a reference in the areas of genetics, evolution and biodiversity conservation, with an emphasis on the study of the genetic diversity of neotropical mammals. He is currently a full professor at the School of Health and Life Sciences and a permanent faculty member of the Graduate Programs in Cellular and Molecular Biology and Ecology and Evolution of Biodiversity at PUCRS, where he coordinates interdisciplinary projects and advises undergraduate and graduate students, contributing significantly to the training of new generations of scientists.
