Wednesday, May 14 | 2025Held by the Marist Center for the Promotion of Children's and Adolescents' Rights, the Marist Network is promoting another edition of the Marist Conference on Confronting Sexual Violence against Children and Adolescents. The event will take place on May 27, via Zoom, from 17 pm to 19 pm. Registration is free and can be done now link.
The theme that guides the discussions at the event is sexual violence against children and adolescents with disabilities. The conference is aimed at professionals who work with children and adolescents, professionals in the protection network, academics, teachers, members and collaborators of religious congregations.
In the program, three guests will be responsible for leading the reflective dialogues. The first of them is Laís Silveira Costa, who will give the talk “Overview of sexual violence against children and adolescents with disabilities in Brazil”. The objective is to discuss ableism as a perpetuator of sexual violence, the underreporting of crimes committed against children and adolescents with disabilities and the difficulties in accessing support and protection services.
The second lecture is “The community as a mechanism for preventing violence”, with guest Liduina Carneiro. The aim is to discuss the rights of children and adolescents with disabilities, public policies for this population and the importance of training caregivers and educators on the risks of sexual violence.
The third guest is Patricia Almeida, from the project I Protect Myself. She will lead the lecture “Education of children and adolescents with disabilities as prevention”. The dialogue will be guided by the importance of working on awareness, knowledge of one's own body and the limits of healthy interactions with children and adolescents for their own protection and identification of abuse.
The 5th Marist Conference on Confronting Sexual Violence against Children and Adolescents has the support of the State Committee for Confronting Sexual Violence against Children and Adolescents of the State of Rio Grande do Sul (CEEVSCA-RS), of the School of Law from PUCRS and the Children and Adolescents Rights Commission of the Brazilian Bar Association of the State of Rio Grande do Sul (OAB-RS).
PhD in public health from the Sérgio Arouca National School of Public Health (ENSP) at Fiocruz; researcher at the Department of Administration and Planning in Health at ENSP/Fiocruz; co-coordinator of the Specialization in Human Rights of Persons with Disabilities at ENSP/Fiocruz; member of the Management Board of the Fiocruz Committee for the Inclusion and Accessibility of Persons with Disabilities and of the ENSP Diversity WG. One of the organizers of the 1st Free National Conference on the Health of Persons with Disabilities, she represents Fiocruz in international and national forums and courses to qualify the performance of health workers in the health care of persons with disabilities. She coordinates and participates in research projects on the theme of the health of persons with disabilities. Reflecting her ethical commitment to the emancipation of persons with disabilities, she has translated scientific knowledge and disseminated content on ableism and accessible health (in simple language, libras, audio-described), in cordel literature and free of charge, available at Fiocruz's Arca Repository. Mother of two children, one of whom has an intellectual disability, she is an activist for this issue.

Co-author of Eu Me Protejo – Education for the prevention of violence in childhood. She is from Rio de Janeiro and the mother of three women, one of whom has a disability. She is a retired federal civil servant, journalist, specialist in Plain Language and holds a master's degree in Disability Studies. She is a member of the National Front for Women with Disabilities. She worked as an editor for TV Educativa and Manchete and as a producer for BBC Brasil. She is co-author of the project Canta e Lê – Children's videos to learn to speak and read. She is the creator of the news agency Inclusive – Inclusion and Citizenship. She is a co-founder of the Movimento Down, Movimento Zika and Adoções Necessárias. She is a member of the jury for the Diversify TV Mipcom international award (Cannes). She collaborates with the MetaSocial Institute and the campaign Ser Diferente é Normal. She was a vice-consul, responsible for assistance to Brazilians and community affairs at the Brazilian consulates in New York and Geneva. She is the creator of the programs Brasileirinhos em Nova York and Brasileirinhos em Genebra. Advisor to Brasil em Mente – PlurAll.
