Always aiming to encourage and qualify teacher training in the country, PUCRS has two different possibilities for education professionals who seek to stand out in the market: teacher training (for those who already have a bachelor's degree in education) and second degree (for teachers who wish to qualify to teach in other areas).

Recognized by the Ministry of Education (MEC), the courses offered by PUCRS allow professionals to complete a new degree in the area of education in up to two years, expanding the possibilities for teachers in the job market. Learn about the differences between each course:

Second degree

In this modality, teachers who are already licensed can carry out a second degree in the same or a different area from your original training. The main advantage is the opportunity to teach more than one curricular subject in basic education. The length of the course will depend on which area the teacher already works in and which one he/she intends to pursue, with a minimum duration of two semesters (one year) and a maximum of four semesters (two years). In the case of the English course, the maximum is two and a half years.

For professor and associate dean of the PUCRS School of Humanities, Ana Soster, the second degree is the most suitable option for those seeking interlocution, interdisciplinarity and dialogue with other areas of knowledge.

“In a training period of one year, up to a maximum of two and a half years, if it is the English course, you will have a second degree that will contribute greatly to your employability. Today's job market, increasingly demanding, places us in a position to discuss, converse, and build projects that integrate the areas. An increasingly qualified professional is needed to deal with the complexity of the world in which we live.”

The second degree can be in the same field of study as the first degree or in another field. For example, if the professional is a teacher in the area of Humanities and Applied Social Sciences (Social Sciences, Philosophy, Geography, History or Theology) and wishes to complement his/her training with a degree in Languages, it will take four semesters in the case of Portuguese Languages or five semesters in the case of English Languages.

Teacher training

Intended for bachelors, the teacher training PUCRS allows professionals who have already graduated with a bachelor's degree to complete a degree. In this modality, the new degree is based on the original training of the interested professional, and the new training path will be established according to the specificities of each course.

In teacher training, a bachelor in History has the opportunity, in up to two semesters (one year), to complete a degree in the same area and work as a teacher, for example. Professor Ana Soster explains that the process is simple:

“An analysis of the curricular base will be carried out here at the School of Humanities and, in a year or a year and a half, the teacher will have training that will enable them to work in basic education schools.”
