The publication classifies undergraduate and postgraduate courses by areas of knowledge

For the fifth consecutive year, the PUCRS Medicine course remains in 1st place among private educational institutions in Brazil. The result was published in the international ranking QS World University Rankings by Subject 2025, which evaluates Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) worldwide and classifies undergraduate and postgraduate courses by areas of knowledge.
In the 2025 edition, 5.203 institutions participated and 1.747 were ranked and had their results published in relation to 54 disciplines in five major areas: Arts and Humanities; Engineering and Technology; Life Sciences and Medicine; Natural Sciences; Social Sciences and Administration.
The ranking considers the following classification criteria: academic reputation; reputation among employers; citations per article; impact of publications and breadth of the institution's international research network.
According to Professor Leonardo Pinto, Dean of the School of Medicine, the course stands out on the national and international scene due to a series of differences that guarantee excellent training for its students.
The first big difference is in the highly qualified faculty. The School has 150 professors, which means an average of one professor for every five students — a rare number among private medical schools. In addition, almost 100% of the professors have a master's or doctorate degree, ensuring a solid academic background aligned with the best practices in the field.
Another essential point is the integration with residency and specialization programs. Hospital São Lucas and the units linked to PUCRS offer more than 50 programs, providing a rich coexistence between undergraduate students and doctors in specialization.
“This exchange of experiences contributes significantly to our students’ learning”, highlights Professor Leonardo.
A infrastructure focused on research and innovation is also a differential. Students have access to postgraduate programs and centers of excellence such as the Brain Institute of RS (InsCer) and the Children's Research Center (Infant), expanding opportunities for scientific and academic development.
Furthermore, Practical training begins in the first years of the course. Supervised internships take place both at PUCRS São Lucas Hospital and in external settings, such as the Vila Fátima Unit and the Presidente Vargas Maternal and Child Hospital. This experience allows students to develop clinical skills from the beginning of their academic career. Finally, internationalization has been one of the pillars of the School's growth.
“Today, we have solid agreements with institutions such as the University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA), in the United States, the Central Hospital of Maputo, in Africa, and the International University of Catalonia, in Europe,” Leonardo emphasizes. These partnerships offer students the chance to experience Medicine in different global contexts, adding value to their training.
The PUCRS School of Medicine also ranked 1st among private schools in the South of Brazil in the selection process of the Medical Association of Rio Grande do Sul (Amrigs) for Medical Residency – considered the main gateway to working in the State's hospitals. This is the 3rd consecutive year that the School remains at the top of the ranking. In the overall ranking, the Medicine course ranked 2nd among all higher education institutions in RS. The test took place on November 17, 2024.
