Daring the new future

A new university, for a new society.

Strategic guidelines

Created collaboratively throughout 2022, Strategic Planning is a link between PUCRS' tradition and the future that needs to be built.

Strategic drivers clarify PUCRS' vision with the aim of guiding all Schools and Units towards the mission. Drivers are affirmative statements that should be seen as premises for the construction of the other elements of the Strategic Plans and the Institutional Development Plan (PDI). Drivers are accompanied by indicators and goals.

PUCRS, based on human rights, Christian principles and the Marist educational tradition, through comprehensive education, generates and transforms knowledge into social, environmental, cultural and economic development, preparing people to change the world for the better.

As a University, we are part of the Marist Network and share the same values inspired by the charism that identifies us and the legacy of our founder, Saint Marcellin Champagnat. These are the elements that guide our conduct and translate, in a concrete and effective way, our way of thinking and acting as an organization, based on our Marist identity.

Love for work

We seek to work with the vitality and dedication of those who serve because they love and identify with the principles, causes and institutional identity. We understand work from the perspective of service and as a means of contributing to the fulfillment and perpetuation of the mission.

Audacity

We are entrepreneurs, we act with courage and responsibility, attentive to the context in which we are inserted and we boldly discern the decisions we make in favor of our mission. We explore possibilities that reality presents us, with innovation, to contribute to the promotion of life.

Family Spirit

We live the family spirit, providing an environment of warmth and closeness. We welcome plurality and diversity, accepting each other as different and complementary, and placing common interests above personal ones. We are entrepreneurs, we act with courage and responsibility, attentive to the context in which we are inserted and we boldly discern the decisions we make in favor of our mission. We explore possibilities that reality presents us with innovation, to contribute to the promotion of life.

Spirituality

Marist spirituality is Marian and apostolic. It is the driving force that gives meaning and harmony to our lives, illuminates our understanding of the world and guides our relationships with God, ourselves, people and nature. We seek to live in accordance with the Gospel, following Jesus, with Mary and Champagnat as inspiration for our way of being and acting.

Solidarity

We are committed and persevering in the pursuit of the common good, in the promotion and defense of rights. We act, preferably, in the service of the poor and excluded who live in border situations, creating bonds of reciprocal and equal responsibility in the construction of peace and justice, being a sign of hope in the world.

Simplicity

We adopt a simple lifestyle on a personal and institutional level. We seek to be authentic and humble, recognizing our potential and limitations. We treat everyone with respect, bringing out the best in their hearts.

Presence

We are a significant, welcoming, attentive and available presence in our relationships with people in different spaces. We educate by example, through openness, reciprocity, commitment, cultivating a relationship of trust, respect and care.

To be a new university for a new society, recognized for its impact and relevance.

Our vision has 4 core elements, each connected to specific strategic drivers.

“To be a new university” This is what we aspire to be. Our history and tradition, spanning 75 years, are the solid foundations on which we stand. We recognize that the times we live in require us to revisit our ability to adapt to the demands of a society that is constantly changing. We need to adopt assertive attitudes that allow us to more quickly discern what does or does not meet our objectives. Furthermore, “being a new university” also indicates what we seek to be as an inclusive, plural and creative university community.

“A new society” increasingly competitive and connected provokes and motivates us in the constant search
for updating. It requires us to have a competitive and sustainable portfolio that is connected to the demands of our time and of today’s and tomorrow’s students. We need to seize opportunities in the face of new scenarios and diversify our strategic alliances, seeking alternative ways and initiatives that guarantee our sustainability in the face of a “new society” that is emerging and of which we are a part. This commitment requires co-responsibility from Schools and Units for the sustainability of our Institution.

“Recognized for its impact” refers to the challenge of being recognized for the impact that our entire ecosystem generates. It reinforces our role as a vector for the development of society without forgetting to be attentive and vigilant to Pope Francis' calls to care for our common home. The phrase also refers to the need to be environmentally aware, take care of our people and maintain the constant improvement of our governance, management and leadership.

“Be relevant” challenges us to go beyond our leading role and academic excellence, our recognition in teaching, research, extension and innovation. To deliver excellence in all areas of activity, we need to consolidate an integrated and complete ecosystem that promotes solutions in various segments and that is constantly updated. Our relevance is also expressed in the guarantee of placing people at the center of each experience. Qualifying the processes and experience of students, customers and partners, attentive to the needs and loyalty of the people and organizations that seek us out.

The Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul is a community higher education institution that works in teaching, research and extension, in permanent interaction with society, aiming at the formation of responsible, autonomous, innovative and supportive citizens, with a view to scientific, cultural, social and economic development. As an institution that is part of civil society, PUCRS recognizes the democratic and republican values of the Rule of Law, respecting fundamental rights and the dignity of the human person. It is governed by its Statute, its General Regulations and the legal norms in force, having as reference of its identity the Christian faith and the Marist educational tradition, and constantly acting in the promotion and protection of human beings, life and the environment.
