The Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul is among the most traditional higher education institutions in Brazil.
It was considered a university by Decree No. 25.794, of November 9, 1948. A private non-profit entity, it maintains a legal link with its sponsor, the Brazilian Union of Education and Assistance (Ubea), a philanthropic institution that makes up the Marist Network.
As a Community Higher Education Institution (Ices) recognized by law 12.881/2013, which provides for the definition, qualification, prerogatives and purposes of Ices, it is affiliated with the Consortium of Community Universities of Rio Grande do Sul (Comung) and the Brazilian Association of Community Universities (Abruc).

For the fourth consecutive year, PUCRS has been elected the best private university in the South of the country, according to an evaluation by the MEC. On a scale of 1 to 5, the University received a score of 4.
Among the 2 best universities in the world and one of the best-rated Brazilian universities in the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR), surpassing 90% of institutions.
We are one of three private universities in the country listed in the ranking and the only one in the South region, with emphasis on the areas of Philosophy, Medicine and Technology.
For the ninth consecutive year, PUCRS is the most remembered private university in Top of Mind. The University received maximum recognition in the Top of Mind and Most Loved Brand categories.
